Mills and Alden Maloney
April 30, 2008
- Wilma Melville, Founder of National Search Dog Foundation nominating Mills and Alden Maloney

It’s entirely possible to teach children to be responsible so that when given the opportunity they will do the right thing.

Wow, what a concept!

This breath of fresh air comes from sisters, Mills and Alden Maloney from Lexington, Kentucky. In the truest of holiday spirit, Mills and Alden spent much of their last two Christmas seasons creating Christmas stockings and stuffing them with dog toys, treats, and holiday cookies. After selling the stockings, the proceeds were sent to the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation [NDSDF].

The girls were...

My name is Michael Abrams and I would like to nominate my son, Collin, for his dedication to the fire service.

Collin started his fire career in New Jersey with the Union Fire Company of Titusville, at the age of 14. Sue Zebick
January 31, 2008
- Debra Ramseyer nominating American Red Cross volunteer Sue Zebick

When Sue Zebick took on an American Red Cross sewing project in 1956, she hadn’t put much thought into staying involved long term. More than half a century later, Sue is an extremely active volunteer leader for our chapter, as well as a hero to many in our community who have been beneficiaries of her helpful hands during their time of greatest need.

Sue began her initial contribution to the Red Cross 51 years ago making layettes and bedding for newborns of military families in Cherry Point, N.C. For 15 years she volunteered her talents and time representing local Red Cross...

Sara Ehrlich
December 01, 2007
- Iraq veteran Dan Ehrlich, nominating his mother for supporting U.S. Army troops deployed overseas

I'd like to nominate Sara Ehrlich, my mom, for recognition on Serving Heroes.

It's one thing for a mom to support her own son when he is deployed overseas. But when that mom supports the children of others, people start to take notice. That's my mom.

I enlisted in the Army in November of 2002 and have been deployed twice to Iraq. Like some of the other soldiers, my mom sent me mail.

But when my mom heard about other soldiers who were not receiving mail from home, she decided to do what she could to lift their spirits. After hooking up with an organization...

Robin Bateman
December 01, 2007
- David Schacherer nominating Robin Bateman for her support of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen.

My name is David Schacherer and I'd like to nominate my mom, Robin Bateman, for recognition on Serving Heroes.

It's easy for a soldier who is deployed to feel forgotten. During my two trips to Iraq, my mother wrote me letters and sent me packages. However, other soldiers received very little correspondence. To help make sure my fellow troops did not feel forgotten she and the Soldiers' Angels organization sent ongoing support.

When I joined the Army in 2002, my mom joined a group called the Proud Army Moms. From there, she was introduced to Soldiers'...

Diana Pfersick
November 20, 2007
- Lisa Caldwell, nominating Diana Pfersick for a lifetime of giving back

I'd like to nominate Diana Pfersick, President and Ambulance Lieutenant of the Rush Volunteer Fire Department, and my mother. Diana Pfersick's volunteer resume is quite possibly longer than her professional resume! She has been an amazing role model for many including me.

Shortly after our family moved to Rush, NY in 1991, Diana joined the Rush Fire Department. She quickly became very active as an EMT and External Firefighter (exempted from being an Internal Firefighter due to asthma). She earned her Critical Care certification to assist neighboring communities that had volunteer...

Reece Yarborough and Jesse McKinney
November 07, 2007
- Fire Chief Jim T. Fielding, recognizing Reece Yarborough and Jesse McKinley

Pearson, Georgia is a rural farming community with less than 2,000 people and hundreds of thousands of pine trees. We are one of the largest Christmas tree suppliers in the United States. Without pine trees, there would be no Pearson.

On April 16, 2007 that horrible scenario seemed like a possibility. Lightning set the town's largest tree grove ablaze. The entire town was scrambling. We didn't know if we should gather family photos and keepsakes and flea or fight the fire that was threatening our lives and our livelihoods.

Forest fire units poured in to our...

Ginger Adams
October 01, 2007
- Jean Eslick honoring Ginger Adams for rescuing animals during a flood

I'd like to nominate Ginger Adams for recognition on Serving Heroes.

If you ever want to know if people are willing to give their hearts and their love, just go through a disaster.

This July, I saw this love first hand when flooding hit my home in Miami, Oklahoma.

On July 2nd, when the low lying areas of Miami started flooding, the small animal shelter I volunteer with was operating near its capacity, with 15 dogs and eight cats. In less than two weeks, that number would swell to 169 dogs and 89 cats.

We didn't have the space or the...

Dayna Hilton
September 15, 2007
- Lori Moon recognizing volunteer firefighter Dayna Hilton

When most people think about heroic firefighters, they think of courageous men and women who put their lives on the line while responding to fires. That's not the only kind of heroism. Let me explain.

There's a saying in the fire service that the best way to fight a fire is to eliminate the spark. But preventing fires takes training. Training takes money. And money is one thing that cash-strapped fire departments don't have.

The choice between conducting a fire prevention seminar or buying firefighters needed safety equipment is no choice at all. So fire...

Shelle Michaels
August 22, 2007
- Sergeant Sam Floberg, thanking Shelle Michaels of Soldiers' Angels

Sergeant Sam Floberg for Shelle Michaels

Under the best of conditions, military hospitals are frightening places.
My circumstances, unfortunately, were a far cry from the best of conditions.
Last November, my vehicle was ambushed while performing a routine check in Afghanistan. A Med-evac team flew me to Germany where I soon learned that I had lost my leg. The driver of my Humvee had lost his life.

I was scared. I was in pain. But most of all, I was alone. Alone to come to terms with a life that was different than I had ever imagined. Alone at a time when I...

Diane Dupuy
August 14, 2007
- Jaime A. Poggioli paying tribute to Diane Dupuy for putting her training into practice

Diane Dupuy is an American Red Cross Instructor with the New Jersey Coast Chapter. Ms. Dupuy is both a Lay Responder and Professional Rescuer FA/CPR/AED, enabling her to teach people in the Jersey Coast community the lifesaving skills they would need to react in emergency situations. Recently these lifesaving training sessions became all too real for Diane.

One night while having dinner at a local restaurant, a gentleman near her started choking. Diane immediately sprung into action. She stood the man up, leaned him over her arm, and gave him two hard back blows. Despite initial...

Gerry Crimmins
July 10, 2007
- Chief Tim McConnell

New Orleans firefighters protect and save lives and property. Since Hurricane Katrina, we've been doing this in less than ideal circumstances.

We lost 22 of our 33 engine houses to flooding. Many of our firefighters are still housed in trailers. Recently one of these temporary facilities, with three firemen inside, was struck by a tornado. While none of the firefighters faced life-threatening injuries, the incident drove home a point: our ability to accomplish our goals has been hampered - and the lives of our firefighters put in danger.

1,000 miles away, Gerry...

George Menzoian
July 10, 2007
- Lauren Larsen

It's amazing how a life can change overnight.

One day, I'm a healthy pregnant 38-year-old. I don't smoke. I eat right. I've run marathons. The next day an emergency C-section is performed to save my baby's life.

Just hours later, my body simply and quietly shut down. My blood pressure, which had been unusually high prior to the C-section, plummeted to a critical low. I was internally bleeding to death.

Another surgery to determine what had gone wrong revealed nothing. There was simply no logical reason why my blood continued to seep through my...
